The opening ceremony was officiated by YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Industrial Development and Minister of Modernization of Agriculture, Sarawak. 23.10.08 - 24 .10.08 Many SMA members (Food Manufacturers) attended Seminar on All You Need to Know on GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) & Workshop on the Science and Practice of GMP Organized by Malaysian Institute of Food Technology (MIFT), co-organized by Ministry of Agriculture, Sarawak; Department of Agriculture, Sarawak In collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and supported by SMA at Holiday Inn, Kuching.

Photo 5 Metal cans and tins produced by Yung Kong Tin Factory Sdn Bhd were displayed in the seminar hall. 26.10.08 Mr. Stephen Ung; Mr. Stanley Lau; Mr. Lau Tiong Ing (SMA Council Members) and Mr. Chai Hui Kiong attended the event in conjunction with state-level Environmental 2008 at Sama Jaya Nature Reserve Park, Tabuan Jaya, held by the Department of Environment and officiated by Environment and Public Health Minister YB Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh. 31.10.08 Mr. Chai Foh Chin (Honorary President), Madam Mariana Ung (Deputy Secretary -General), Ms. Josephine Li (Council Member) and Mr. Yeo Eng Hock (Executive Secretary) attended a briefing on Gazetted five rules Under Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Cap. 76) organised by Department of Labour Sarawak at Industrial Training Institute[Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP)] Kota Samarahan. Employees in Sarawak will be accorded rights and benefits similar to those of their counterparts in the Peninsular following the gazzetting of five rules under the Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Cap 76) by Human Resources Minister, YB Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam. The gazzetted rules clarified provisions in the ordinance and should be used as guideline by employers and employees in promoting good relations to safeguard their respective interests. The five gazzetted rules Under Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Cap. 76) in June 2008 as follow: (1.) Labour (Limitation of Powers of Officers)(Sarawak) Rules 2008, which prescribes the limitation of powers of Officers from Labour Department. (2.) Labour (Limitation Overtime Work)(Sarawak) Rules 2008, which prescribes the maximum hours of overtime an employee can perform in a month shall be 104 hours. (3.) Labour (Contents of Contract)(Sarawak) Rules 2008. Every written contract of service shall contain clear and unambiguous terms all that as may be necessary to define the rights and obligations of the parties to the contract. (4.) Labour (Termination And Lay-Off Benefits)(Sarawak) Rules 2008, which provides for payment of termination, layoff and retrenchment benefits. (5.)
