4th Meeting for 32nd SMA Council.

Dato' Hii Ngo Sing (President), Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo (Secretary -General), Madam Mariana Ung (Deputy Secretary -General), Mr. Wilford Teo and Mr. Lam Lee Onn (Council Members) called on Dr. Ngenang Ak Janggu, the Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Industrial Development, Sarawak. They discussed the economic impact on Industry at the current economic crisis and proposal to the government.

Ten SMA Member Manufacturers participated in the Malaysia-Made Product Exhibition in conjunction with the Buy Malaysia-Made Product Campaign at the Boulevard Shopping Mall, Kuching.

Mr. Ben Tien Khiong Chin, the Assistant Treasurer attended a dinner hosted by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) in conjunction with the rebranding of SEDC Hotels. Two hotels under SEDC, namely Holiday Inn Kuching and Crowne Plaza Riverside Kuching, have been renamed Grand Margherita Hotel and Riverside Majestic Hotel respectively effective 1 January 2009.

SMA Council members attended a Chinese New Year Gathering held at the residence of Dato' Hii Ngo Sing, the President of SMA.

Mr. Chiou Huey Ping (Vice-President), Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo (Secretary -General) and Mr. Ben Tien Khiong Chin (Assistant Treasurer) attended Chinese New Year Gathering hosted by Sarawak Timber Association at Wisma STA, Kuching.

Mr. Chai Foh Chin (Honorary President), Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo (Secretary -General) and some members attended Economic Council Roadshow organized by Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister's Department in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Sarawak State Government at Hilton Hotel, Kuching.

The main objective of this Roadshow was to create awareness among the target groups comprising of the public and the private sectors, industry players, academicians, non-government organisations (NGOs), Bankers, SMEs, MNCs and etc on the country's current economic situation as well as gather feedback and suggestions from the grass root level on how to address and overcome the economic situation.

Dato' Hii Ngo Sing, the President and some Council Members paid a call on YB Datuk Amar Abang Hj Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Hj Openg, Minister of Housing, Sarawak. SMA appealed the Ministry to encourage contractors and suppliers to purchase the building materials made in Sarawak.

SMA Council Members led by Dato' Hii Ngo Sing, the President paid a call on YB Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Minister of Housing.

Mr. Mathew Bilong Jeno, the out-going branch manager and Madam Selleha Chulon, the in-coming branch manager of Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) called on Dato' Hii Ngo Sing, the President of SMA. Also present in the President's office were Mr. Chiou Huey Ping (Vice-President) and Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo (Secretary -General).

The Secretary-General attended the 208th Sarawak Industrial Coordination Committee (ICC) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Kuching.

The Ministry of Industrial Development (MID) Sarawak and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Sarawak are conducting a study on Cost of Doing Business in Sarawak.
Mr. Joseph Lau, the Secretary-General attended a meeting in connection with the above Study at MID.

Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo, the Secretary-General attended Chinese New Year Dinner organized by the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (ACCCIS) at Hilton Hotel, Kuching.

Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo, the Secretary-General was invited to present a briefing on Buy Local Products / Brand Campaign at 8th State Housing Coordination Committee Meeting.

Mr. Caesar Atienza, the consultant of German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) BIMP-EAGA visited SMA and held a focused group discussion on the socio-economic growth in BIMP-EAGA.

Mr. Chiou Huey Ping, the Vice-President attended a Briefing on Regulations of FAMA (Grading, packing and labeling of agricultural products)2008 (Peraturan-peraturan Lembaga Pemasaran Pertanian Persekutuan [Penggredan, Pembungkusan dan Pelabelan Keluaran Pertanian -3p] 2008) organized by Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) at
Ministry of Modernization of Agriculture, Sarawak.
