SMA Activities Report (January – March 2013)

Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) has been commissioned by the State Government to conduct a study entitled “Baseline Study on Expatriates and Other Non-Resident (Foreigners) Employees in Sarawak”. On 29 January 2013, Ms. Nur Asmida Binti Arzmi the Assistant Research Manager of SDI together with researchers from Universiti Teknologi MARA Sarawak visited SMA to discuss with Mr. Lai King Min, the President and Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo, the Secretary-General, to collect their feedback and insights relating to the topic above.Photo 1 Group photo after Discussion on “Baseline Study on Expatriates and Other Non-Resident (Foreigners) Employees in Sarawak”. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), one of the world’s largest banks, has officially opened its first branch in Sarawak at Jalan Padungan, Kuching, within the city’s vibrant commercial centre.

The seminar aims to update all affected importers of iron, steel and aluminium products to the new scope of implementation and to provide platform for the companies to highlight related matters. 3 papers were presented at the seminar as follows: Paper 1: General Importation Policy - Latest Iron And Steel Policy by Ministry of International Trade and Industry Malaysia (MITI). Paper 2: Tariff Lines for Iron and Steel, Determining the Right Tariff Lines by Royal Malaysian Customs. Paper 3: Methods of Importation by SIRIM QAS International / CIDB. 20.02.13 Mr. Lai King Min (President) and Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo (Secretary -General) attended the Chinese New Year Gathering hosted by Sarawak Timber Association at Wisma STA, Kuching. 22.02.13 Mr. Yeo Eng Hock, the Executive Secretary attended a Pocket Talk Session: Matrade’s 2013 Programmes (Trade Promotion and Exporters Capacity Building) at Matrade Sarawak. The talks is organised to share and update the government agencies, trade associations as well as chambers of commerce on MATRADE's 2013 trade promotion programmes, capacity building programmes as well as to discuss any issues related to trade promotion programmes such as Market Development Grant (MDG).

Mr. Yeo Eng Hock (2nd right), the Executive Secretary attended the Matrade’s Pocket Talk Session.Photo 2 The representatives of Government Agencies and Trade Associations attended the Matrade’s Pocket Talk Session. 24.02.13 The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) held it Chinese New Year Open house on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year(Yuan Xiao Jie). 70 Corporate Bodies, Associations and Non-Governmental Organisations, included SMA member manufacturers: Syarikat Kion Hoong Cooking Oil Mills Sdn Bhd, Kayusar Sdn Bhd and Amalgamated Batteries Manufacturing (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd served complimentary food, beverages and gifts as part of their corporate social responsibility.

The Briefing was presented by Mr. Dzulzalani bin Eden, Assistant Director of Labour Department Sarawak.
07.03.13 Mr. Joseph Lau, the Secretary General attended the 233rd Sarawak Industrial Coordination Committee (ICC) Meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Kuching. 16.03.13 Mr. Chai Koh Haw, a Council Members attended a Talk on “Culture and Economy” in conjunction with the CEO Programme 2012-2013 jointly organized by Raffles Business Institute, Singapore and Tsinghua University, China from 14 – 15 March 2013 held in Kuching. Two papers presented at the Talk on “Culture and Economy” were “Spirit of the Century-Old Tsinghua” and “ASEAN-China in the next decade ”. 21.03.13 Mr. Tie Tung Wei, a Council Member attended Networking Session on Competitiveness held by Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) at Grand Margherita Hotel, Kuching. Two papers were presented at the Networking Session, ie “Briefing on State’s Macroeconomic Development” by State Economic Planning Unit Sarawak and “Malaysia’s Competitiveness: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities and Briefing on Executive Opinion Survey (EOS)” by Ms. Noeline Chanan Singh, the Manager, Global Competitiveness Department, Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC). The session included Executive Opinion Survey for “IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2013”. (IMD = International Institute for Management Development) 29.03.13 - 31.03.13 SMA Member Manufacturers, Leaves Food Industries Sdn Bhd and Pico Food Industry Sdn Bhd participated in an exhibition in conjunction with CycleFest Sarawak at Padang Merdeka, Kuching. CycleFest Sarawak was organized by Sarawak Cycling Association.
