01.01.17 Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo (President) was appointed as a member of Special Task Force to Facilitate Business or Pasukan Petugas Khas Pemudah Cara Pemiagaan Peringkat Negeri Sarawak (SAMUDAH), for a period of two years, effective from 1 January 2017.SAMUDAH serves as a channel for the business community and public sector to convey issues, problems and proposals relating to government delivery system. 12.01.17 YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Adenan bin Satem, Chief Minister of Sarawak passed away on 11 January. Mr. Joseph Lau (President) and Mr. Stephen Hii (Secretary-General) paid their last respects to the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem at the state mosque in Petra Jaya. 18.01.17 4th Meeting for 36th SMA Council was held at SMA Meeting Room. 20.01.17 Some members attended convocation to introduce Program 1Malaysia Globally Recognised Industry and Professional Certification (1Malaysia GRIP) Training, organised by Human Resources Development Berhad at Hilton Hotel, Kuching. 04.02.17 Mr. Stephen Hii (Secretary-General) and Mr. Louis Hii (Council Member) attended Chinese New Year Gathering hosted by Kuching & Kota Samarahan Division Hardware & Machinery's Association.

Mdm. Mariana Ung, Mr. Ben Tien (Vice-Presidents), Mr. Stephen Hii (Secretary-General), Mr. Tie Tung Wei (Treasurer), Mr. Stephen Ung (Assistant Treasurer) and Yeo Eng Hock (Executive Secretary) paid their last respects to the late Datuk Lee and expressed their condolences to his family. 19.02.17 Mr. Tie Tung Wei (Treasurer) and Mr. Yeo Eng Hock (Executive Secretary) attended the funeral of Datuk Lee Chi Min. Datuk Lee Chi Min Foundation donated RM 5000.00 to SMA in memory of the Late Datuk Lee.

Photo shows: Mr. Li Wing Fong (centre) was presenting a donation cheque to Mr. Tie. 22.02.17 Mr. Stephen Hii Hium Ung (Secretary-General) attended a Briefing to Businesses/Exporters on the New Measures to Develop Foreign Exchange Market. The Briefing Session was jointly organized by Bank Negara Malaysia, Regional Office Kuching and the Foreign Exchange Administration Department. On 2 December 2016, as part of the strategy to broaden and deepen the Malaysian financial markets, the Financial Markets Committee, in collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), announced several measures intended to enhance the liquidity of the foreign exchange (FX) market. Among the measures are that exporters are to convert 75% of their proceeds into ringgit effective Monday, 5 December 2016. The central bank said that as an incentive, companies could place their proceeds from exports in local banks and earn a special deposit rate of 3.25% per annum. 23.02.17 Mr. Anthony Ng (Chief Executive Officer) and Mr. Navin Manghan (Vice President, Marketing & Strategic Alliance) of Malaysian Institute Technology Academy Sdn Bhd (MIT Academy Sdn Bhd) called on Mr. Joseph Lau Ka Hoo, the President of SMA. MIT Academy Sdn Bhd is conducting Skills Training under Ministry of Human Resource and is a Private Vocational College appointed by the Ministry of Education.
