The mother of Mr. Mr. Lee Vui Shin passed away on 22 June 2007. The President, the Vice-Presidents, the Executive Secretary and a Council Member (Mr. Chai Koh Haw) paid last respect to the late Mrs. Lee and expressed their sympathies.

SPEECH BY DATO' HII NGO SING, PRESIDENT OF SMA AT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF SMA ON 6 MAY 2007

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you very much for attending the 2007 Annual General Meeting.

Due to the contributions of SMA Council Members and support of our members, many events and activities had been carried out in 2006. SMA had organized and participated in training courses, seminars, briefings and other meetings. We had also printed and issued SMA Newsletter quarterly to keep our members well informed through out the year.

In addition, SMA had submitted memorandums on the views of issues and proposals from our members to Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Industrial Development Sarawak and others Government Department concerned as well as attended the dialogue sessions organized by various ministries. SMA welcomes the suggestions and opinions from our members at any time other than the annual general meeting..

When the State Government approved the new tariff rates for SESCO with effect from 1 April 2007, we are very concerned about the impact on the competitiveness between the local and the imported products. Therefore, we submitted our views and proposals to SESCO and Ministry of Industrial Development Sarawak immediately.

Sarawak manufacturers are presently facing the transportation disadvantage in both the importation of materials and exportation of finished products. The increase in tariff will certainly make Sarawak industries less competitive. SMA strongly opposes SESCO to increase the electricity tariff.

In line with the Sarawak Government`s Policy to industrialize Sarawak and to enable local manufacturers to compete in the global arena, the state government should show her concern and resolve the various problems faced by the manufacturers. Apart from that, manufacturers must also show their concern to the impact brought by trading globalization tendency. We have to produce products that are competitive in terms of price and quality.

In order to increase the efficiency of human resource, the employees are encouraged to attend suitable training courses. Besides that, we should maximize the use of technology, mechanization and automation to improve our productivity and reduce the operating cost.

Members are encouraged to contact the Human Resources Development Berhad (HRDB) under the Ministry of Human Resources, for more information to upgrade knowledge and skills of their employees.

For the technology, mechanization and automation of the operating systems, members are encouraged to consult National Productivity Corporation (NPC), which is an agency of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). Please contact SMA Secretariat for more details on HRDB and NPC.
