Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment, SarawakMinistry of Industrial Development (MID) Sarawak has been restructured and changed the name to Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment (Mieti) Sarawak. YB Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has been appointed as Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment on 13 May 2016. YB Datuk Julaihi Narawi is Assistant Minister for Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) and YB Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais is Assistant Minister for Entrepreneur Development. During a briefing on the restructuring of the ministry on 28 May 2016, YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said that the ministry will coordinate and collaborate with all agencies involved in entrepreneur development in the state, in order to undertake its new roles and responsibilities including streamlining the roles and functions of MID and Entrepreneur Development and Halal Industry Unit which was previously under the Chief Minister’s Department. The ministry will also continue to develop more industrial estates particularly in the rural areas in line with Chief Minister’s ‘Go Rural Policy’. He also pointed out that the ministry has been tasked to further develop the oil and gas industry particularly the value adding downstream activities through the Sarawak Oil and Gas Development Unit (SOGDU) which was approved by the cabinet recently.

YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment made the request during the National SME Development Council Meeting chaired by YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Prime Minister in Putrajaya on 23 June 2016. The meeting discussed a wide range of subjects affecting the development of SMEs in the country. Accompanying YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan to the meeting were YB Datuk Julaihi Narawi is Assistant Minister for Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion), and Datu Liaw Soon Eng, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment. In a statement issued, YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah was said to have highlighted the high cost of doing businesses in Sarawak due to the poor road networks. “For those who want to export their products to Peninsular Malaysia and overseas, there will be additional freight charges. As such, we requested the tax incentives on double tax deductions for rattan and wood-based and for insurance premiums to be extended,” he said. He also requested the double tax deduction to include sawn-timber and veneer. This would reduce the financial burden of Sarawak companies especially the SMEs.
