The Federal Government started the Industrial Master Plan (IMP) 1 in 1986 with the main objectives of expediting industrialisation and encouraging more Foreign Direct Investments into the country. In 1996, the IMP2 was launched to enhance the manufacturing sector along the value chain. The concept of manufacturing plus-plus and cluster approach toward industrialisation was introduced in IMP2.
In 2006, the Federal Government launched the IMP3 which is a strategic master plan in achieving the National Mission of the 9th Malaysian Plan and Vision 2020. The launching of IMP3 is expected to drive industrialisation to a higher level of global competitiveness, through the transformation and innovation of the manufacturing and service sectors.
The Third Industrial Master Plan was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Friday, 18 August 2006.
